About Us

Background

Cryobiology, Inc. was founded in 1989 by a PhD lab director in Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) who saw the need for reliably high quality, tested and quarantined anonymous donor sperm samples. The majority of our donors are students at local universities, most in graduate or professional schools, who collect samples in the program for approximately one year. Cryobiology, Inc. has very high standards for acceptance into the donor program. Our acceptance rate is less than 10% of all potential donors screened.

Since 1989, Cryobiology continues to be a leader in donor selection because we:

  • Guarantee a certain number of motile sperm cells per vial-higher than anyone else in the business at our inception.
  • Ensure all donors on the donor list are available at the time of publication.
  • Pioneered a Limited Availability section of our donor list to alert physicians and patients when the number of vials of a particular donor gets low.
  • Excel in labeling our vials for the convenience of our users. Our color coding on each vial indicates donor ethnicity. Many of our competitors now have similar policies in place.

In addition to our main lab in Columbus, OH, Crybiology has well-trained medical technicians at our established satellite facilities in Pittsburgh, PA and La Crosse, WI. These labs are both near local universities and under the direction of a PhD who is a certified High Complexity Laboratory Director.

The same screening, testing and acceptance procedures for donors are used at all facilities. Samples from acceptable donors are then processed, cryopreserved, and quarantined at the satellites until they are ready for release. Once deemed acceptable for release, the vials are shipped to Cryobiology for distribution. Donors processed at sateillites are designated with a prefix of "PC" for Pittsburgh or "LX" for La Crosse, followed by a four digit number. Donors processed at Cryobiology are designated by the "CB" prefix and a 3 digit donor number.

Cryobiology satellites also offer client depositor semen banking for cancer, vasectomy, and surgery patients. A wide range of andrology testing such as semen analysis, antibody testing and morphology is also available.

Professional

The reception and billing staff are always ready to take your call and greet you in a most friendly way. They can answer many of your ordering, shipping, and general information questions. You can order donor information through them and they can guide you through the website or the donor selection and ordering process.

The laboratory staff is available to answer technical questions about the donor program such as those pertaining to donor testing and sample processing. Because the laboratory staff has weekly contact with donors who are currently collecting samples, they are responsible for creating donor profiles, performing photo matches, and answering detailed questions about the donors. With over 30 years of combined reproductive experience, the staff can answer most reproductive related questions. All technicians have science or medical backgrounds and many performed research in the animal industry prior to choosing the human field.

We welcome your comments and questions. Please don't hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working with you and wish you every success.

What information do you release on a donor?
Most Cryobiology donors are anonymous. Any information released about an anonymous donor is non- identifying. The donor profile is a physical description of the donor and is created by Cryobiology staff. It also includes a short summary of the donor's personality and interests. Additionally, we offer a copy of the donor's medical health history. This three- generation family health history is completed by the donor upon acceptance into the donor program and is updated periodically while he continues to participate. The In Your Own Words essay offered for each donoor is photocopied (includes the donor's handwriting) so that written expressions can be evaluated in addition to the medical information. Some donors choose to allow additional information such as baby photos, audio interviews, and silhouettes to provide more non-identifying information about themselves. Donors are not required to participate in release of this information however. Other donors are very open about their donation and agree to release current photos of themselves and also possibly be contacted when offspring reach 18 years of age. Just as each donor is unique in physical characteristics, they are also unique in release of information.

All donors sign a consent form upon acceptance into the program, which waives any rights or responsibility to children born to patients who use their sperm. Patient data, established pregnancies, miscarriages, birth information or any other tangible information concerning patients is never released to a donor unless by mutual consent of the donor and offspring.
